Saundra Mims Minor Route grew up a cheerleader. She was on a squad throughout her elementary and middle school years. She attended McKinley High School, where she brought her cheerleading talents. Route thought cheerleading would always be in her future after high school. She attended LSU in the fall She tried out for the basketball dance group, known as the Tigresses.

Over the years, the team has not only fostered a strong sense of community between members, but allowed the women to see the benefits of their commitment to excellence. A former Golden Girl named Haley Babb speaks highly of her experience with the team, saying, "We get to see the hard work and practice that it takes to get to perform on game day, it was a great experience. The gala featured each of the 13 different uniforms worn by the dancers over the years. In attendance were Golden Girl Alum along with some of the original members from the team. But, the celebration didn't end there.
